 how about less then 50 miles...especially with gas prices the way they are.

 Well... it all depends on how "connected" we are, I guess. I travelled over 6000 miles to meet someone before, and across the US another time (neither from this site-- and the US trip was paid for by the person I visited). From this site: people travel to visit me, not the other way around.

 If you travell far, it's also a question of wanting to see a new place as well as to see the other person.

Personally if I think the person is worth it, I'd quite happily travel Stateside to see him.
