Messenger Ettiquette-cetera.

Ok, so I've started logging onto Instant Messenger on here when I sign in. So far, I've been messaged by a guy asking if I'm bi. The answer is No, which I told him.
I also managed a brief rather stilted conversation with a local woman a few weeks ago.

However, as I'm shy (its not just a name) - to a point at least, I'm never quite sure how to try and strike up a conversation on here. It doesn't help that you are limited to a few letters for that first page.....
Should you just jump right in to "talking dirty", or should you chat about 'stuff'? I'm guessing every time is different, but I could do with some pointers, please.....

 A 'hi or hello' followed up by stuff is always good, gives you an idea if theyre expressive or not and if that's the sort of personality you find attractive or interesting.
